Do you remember a time when you were young, when you got lost in your little imaginary world?
Well, for me, it used to be with little green plastic soldiers, Red Indians, action figures, Micro Machines, but mostly it was with a little building toy called Lego. The possibilities were endless with that medium because if you got bored with what you made, you could always take it apart and rebuild it into something new. This world of make believe took up a lot of my childhood, a time before smartphones and iPads.
I'm much older now, and I have a three year old son of my own, but I still can't grow up. I'm still playing with my little green men and those pesky Lego bricks.
I've been building consistently with Lego since 2014 and have experimented with different styles and scales over the years, creating MOCs(My Own Creations) from popular culture like this mini Thor's Hammer or Hellboy's Samaritan. Or from Anime, Spike's Swordfish spacecraft from Cowboy Bebop, AGL .45 Long Colt from Trigun, a bunch of vehicles from the arcade game Metal Slug, and various other things from real life and fiction.
In 2017, I started a small business called Lioncity MOCs, a place to sell my creations as kits or instructions and also offer my services as a freelance brick artist. Since I started making models of military vehicles, aircraft and ships, I've opened up a world of opportunity and have delivered many commissioned models for happy customers. I also had the opportunity to do two big scale projects for the RSAF(in 2018 when the Republic of Singapore Air Force turned 50 years old) and the SAF(in 2022 to celebrate 55 years of the Singapore Armed Forces). That was an incredibly stressful undertaking but also an eye opener and wonderful experience.
I've also had the chance to build many of Singapore's Navy ships, and one of my proudest was the 1:100 scale Littoral Mission Vessel that took me a month of refining and customisation. It is, to date, the biggest custom model I've ever delivered and another milestone in the bag.
So why did I create this website? Well, I wanted to start a new journey of building and documenting the process of creating a world in 1:120 scale, which would be compatible with Brickmania's Micro Brick Battle(a game that I'm learning to play). I've always liked war movies and history, so making WWII models was right up my alley. Here at Micro Brick World, I want to build many micro military models(my approach on it), past and present and showcase it to the community, and also share tips, tutorials and resources that would help grow the community of microscale builders(which I know there are many).
Micro Brick World will also not be limited to military stuff, but branch out into, as the name suggests, the entire world. I was actually inspired to try building other types of vehicles when my son asked for an ambulance. So I thought, okay, let me make a small one, that isn't easy to break and then, I built a police car and fire truck to go along with it. And I can say proudly, that it has been battle tested by his tiny hands and survived! Who needs Tomica anymore? I can just build him an entire line of vehicles(so I thought)!
So stay tuned and follow along to support my little journey, and if you have a little kid of your own, I think you might find something cool you can build for him or her here.
You can read about my interview with Geek Culture here, an article about the Metal Slug creations here, or a few times I was blogged by The Brothers Brick here and here.
